Waipahu is part of the Ewa District of Oahu. It was once a sugar plantation town operated by Oahu Sugar Company. The plantation ran from 1897 thru 1995.
Waipahu’s name refers to an artesian spring. In Hawaiian, Waipahu is derived from wai, meaning water, and pahumeaning "burst or gush forth".
Before Western civilization set foot in Hawaii, the Hawaiians considered Waipahu as the capital of Oahu. The Hawaiian Royalty would often gather and take pleasure in the cool water gushing from the ground of Waipahu spring. You can walk in their footsteps just by buying real estate in Waipahu!
Today, Waipahu is mostly residential and businesses. Waikele largely consist of the newer subdivisions in Waipahu and also a grand outlet shopping center and golf course.
