Stationed at Pearl Harbor or Hickam Air Force Base? You'll probably want to start looking in the neighborhoods close by to avoid the traffic that piles up on the highways at the start and end of workdays. We'll limit this discussion to those Oahu areas in easy reach, but we can always expand your home search if desired. So – where are the homes near Pearl Harbor & Hickam AFB?
Let's start with the Salt Lake area which is located on the side of Pearl Harbor & Hickam going toward downtown Honolulu (see Salt Lake Houses or Salt Lake Condos for sale now). This part of Oahu has 2 high schools – Radford & Moanalua, 2 elementary schools, Salt Lake & Aliamanu, as well as Aliamanu Middle School, covering all ages. Buy a house or condo here and you'll join a lot of other military who have made Salt Lake home.
Despite the abundant development hugging Salt Lake Boulevard itself, you'll find a lot of parks and hiking trails off that main strip to enjoy. Salt Lake also contains the very large Navy Exchange & Commissary, located off-base, so grocery shopping is in very easy reach. There's also a Target, small shopping centers scattered around and Pearlridge Mall is just a short drive. Whatever you need is minutes away from your home in Salt Lake.
Aiea is another excellent choice if a short commute is at the top of your new home wish list. Smaller in size than Salt Lake with about 9,000 residents, it's located just west from the main gates of Pearl Harbor and Hickam. Aiea takes in the area from Kamehameha Hwy & the ocean on the south, up the hills to the north.
Hands down the biggest structure here is the Pearlridge Mall, which is 2nd only to Ala Moana Center in shopping square footage on Oahu. Aiea Shopping Center, not too far away, is an excellent alternative for grocery shopping, local eateries & less traffic to deal with on most days.
Have children? Aiea is served by Aiea, Pearl Ridge & Waimalu Elementary Schools, Aiea Intermediate School & Aiea High School.
Like Salt Lake, Aiea offers a mix of both houses & condos, so you should be able to find home buying choices that fit your needs and lifestyle.
If you head a little further west you'll find yourself in Pearl City. The exact border of Aiea & Pearl City isn't always clear so there are some areas that locals call by both names. Even some neighborhoods, like Waimalu & Wailuna, cross over at certain points. What is clear, though, is that Pearl City is the biggest of the 3 neighborhoods we're looking at, with almost 48,000 people living there.
As a Pearl City homeowner you'll have not only the shopping options of Pearlridge Mall, but also a wide variety of other stores at the many strip malls here, including one that holds a Sam's Club. Best of all, you'll find the small family-run restaurants that this area is famous for, many of which are big favorites with the locals. Living here can be an education in Hawaii street level cuisine that'll leave you wanting more.
There are many who work on Pearl Harbor & Hickam who've chosen to buy homes further out, often in Waipahu, which is west of Pearl City, and Mililani, a growing town toward the center of Oahu. Both offer properties that can be more affordable and in a smaller town atmosphere.
Those areas do have their own unique charms, so we've included them below in the links to the current homes for sale. Just click on the Oahu neighborhood you're interested in exploring. In no time you'll have full listings right there in front of you.
