Much of the Spreckelsville & Paia real estate is on, or near, prime oceanfront views. This is a place you come to in order to get away from it all and live life independently. These are small towns that attract the artists and ocean lovers, along with a few golf nuts.
Paia is the last stop on the famous Road to Hana as you head eastward before you get to Hana itself. If you’ve been on this notorious highway you know that this puts it not only in a very out-of-the-way location, but also in the middle of some stunning scenery.
It began life as one of the communities based around the pineapple & sugar plantations that sprung up on Maui in the 1800’s and 1900’s. That industry has mostly disappeared from here, replacing it with boutique shops and art galleries that showcase the local artists that now make Paia home.
What has remained are many of the old plantation-era buildings and houses, giving it a classic charm that makes the man-made sights as delightful as the natural ones. The population remains small also - 2700 people as of 2010, retaining the small town feel that is something locals treasure.
The tradewinds blow consistently keeping you cool year-round. Should they ever take a break you have beautiful ocean waiting to revive and rejuvenate you whenever needed.
Spreckelsville is named for Claus Spreckels, a sugar baron who built a sugar mill here, which attracted workers who were the first residents of this community. In today’s Spreckelsville you’re more likely to see beachfront houses and avid golfers headed out to the Maui Golf & Country Club than any work related to sugar.
You’ll find Spreckelsville west of Paia, putting it less than 10 minutes drive from Kahului. That proximity allows you to do any major shopping you need to do without much fuss or travel time. In no time you’re back to this oasis of ocean and greenery with your errands done.
You only have about 400 other residents who call this address home, so this is a sleepy area, even for Maui. Homes in Spreckelsville & Paia are definitely on the high side of the market. Much of the houses go for over one million dollars. There are condos here which are more affordable, though they’re often up toward the top as well for Maui housing. With the incredible scenery, beaches and ocean, it’s no wonder, though. This is paradise.
This is your chance to live in a place, and in a way, that few people get to do. Wake up to the sounds of nature calling you to the new day, the soothing low roar of waves coming in and the sight of nature's beauty, unrivaled by anything man could ever build.
