The iconic volcanic crater Diamond Head sits on the south-east end of Oahu just beyond Waikiki. It was originally called Laeahi (“brow of the tuna”) by the ancient Hawaiians.
Its current name was given by British sailors in the 1800’s who thought there might be diamonds in the soil after seeing the crater from the distance—they turned out to be calcite crystals in the lava rocks.
Diamond Head is easily one of Hawaii’s most famous landmarks as well as a popular hiking spot where you can get a panoramic view of Waikiki and Oahu’s South Shore. You'll also find some of the most exclusive real estate on Oahu at its feet.
