Houses & Homes in Laupahoehoe, Ninole, Ookala & Umauma
The North Hilo real estate district is the place for homebuyers who like the idea of an easy driving distance to the shopping & services of Hilo proper, yet want the quiet, country life day to day. That's exactly what you find here when shopping for Laupahoehoe homes or houses from Ninole To Maulua. This area of the Big Island is technically part of the Hamakua Coast, which makes up northeastern Hawaii.
It shares the lush tropical vegetation and scenery of that area, but with an even smaller population. The largest ‘city’, Laupahoehoe, has a population of only about 600 people, while communities like Umauma, Ninole & Ookala each can only claim 1/2 as many residents or less.
A common zip code, rather than a central town area or even a Main Street unites most of them. They all have their own personality, though.
North Hilo Communities You Can Call Home
Laupahoehoe emerged during the sugar industry’s reign from the late 1800s until around 1996 when the last plantation closed down. Its name means ‘leaf of lava’ in Hawaiian, in recognition of the leaf-like shapes the lava has made on the beaches nearby.
You’ll find many scenic views to enjoy in this village that make it a favorite drive for both locals & tourists. Ninole is actually 1 of 2 towns on the Big Island that use this name. The other is found on the southeastern side of Hawaii. The Northeastern Ninole counts about 190 people in its population.
The nearby community of Ookala also has less than 200 residents and is located 4 miles north of Laupahoehoe. The area was known by many different names until the Board of Geographic Names finally stepped in and made Ookala its official name. However, you will still find those using the old ones when referring to it. That’s just the local way.
Buying a home in North Hilo will certainly mean a house. This is true Hawaii rural life, including more land usually in the purchase.
