Are you a military homebuyer stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corp Base? If so, you've got an especially beautiful part of Oahu to shop in for a new home. In Hawaii, that’s saying something.
It also means that the home and condo prices are often higher in the towns near Kaneohe MCB. However, with the assistance of a knowledgeable real estate agent, you can find a home in your price range.
The town of Kaneohe, as you can guess, is located directly off the base (see Kaneohe Houses or Kaneohe Condos for sale now). What you need to understand is that the Kaneohe mailing address takes in a broad area of the Windward Side of Oahu. The city limits extend north up the coast to as far as the Kaaawa neighborhood, approximately 20 miles from the base. Therefore you should be very aware of what part of Kaneohe you’re looking in for your home purchase.
Kaneohe has a population of almost 35,000 people, making it the 2nd largest community on this side of the Island, 2nd only to Kailua. Originally a center for agriculture it is now a modern, developed part of Oahu with big box stores, several shopping centers and the large Windward Mall in its central area.
The majority of these are located along Kamehameha Highway, so they’re easy to find and go from one to another if you want to get your shopping done in one trip. These shops and businesses serve the northern parts of Kaneohe as well, though residents there do have more of a drive to reach them.
Have kids? Kaneohe has 8 elementary schools, including Heeia, Kapunahala, Benjamin Parker, Kaneohe, Waihole, Puohala, Kahalu'u, and Ahuimanu. Older children will probably attend King Intermediate School and then Castle High School.
Being on the Oahu coastline does mean that there’s a wide range of prices, from affordable condos to some multi-million dollar estate homes. Kailua is especially famous for Kailua Beach, one of the best beaches in the world. In fact, it has been retired from competition on some of those lists to let other beaches compete. Free time for residents revolve around the sand and ocean activities, like kayaking, scuba diving, outrigger canoe paddling and, of course, surfing. There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the waters here.
Kailua has a central shopping district where you’ll find cafes, grocery stores, boutique shops and even Macy’s. The other areas of town are low-rise, though, and have the distinct Hawaii small town feel, which is how the residents like it. Students have a variety of schools serving them including many elementary schools - Aikahi, Enchanted Lake, Kaelepulu, Kailua, Kainalu, Keolu, Lanikai, Maunawili, and Mokapu. There's also Kailua Intermediate School, Kalaheo High School, and Kailua High School.
