Kauai's Waimea CanyonBuying West Kauai real estate means getting something a little different. For one thing, the West side of Kauai has a drier climate than the rest of the Island. That doesn't mean that it is any less scenic, though. In fact, West Kauai has some spectacular natural wonders that are extremely unique – not just in Kauai, but all of Hawaii.

The best known of these is Waimea Canyon, commonly called the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’. A mile wide, 14 miles long and 3600 feet deep, you’ll find numerous views of its incredible valleys and the kind of sculpturing that only Mother Nature can perform. If you’re a hiker, then this is your paradise. Living here will give you the chance to trod the many trails of Waimea Canyon. Repeated wanderings here, though, will never become routine or ordinary. The scenery never fails to amaze and refresh its visitors, no matter how many times you come.

Make Your Home In One of West Kauai’s Picturesque Towns

The largest town here is Kekaha (look over Kekaha Homes For Sale), with a population of over 3,200. It grew quickly due to Hawaii’s booming sugar industry, the Kekaha Sugar Mill employing succeeding generations of some local families. The mill closed down in 2000, but the town remains the center for much of the business community of West Kauai.

Plantation Era Building in HanapepeHanapepe (population approx. 2200) is known for 2 things. First, for its beautiful plantation era buildings that make up the main part of town. Second, its vibrant art community (view Hanapepe Homes for sale).

The historic buildings have made it popular as a movie backdrop, including its serving as the inspiration for the town in ’Lilo & Stitch’. The active arts community showcases itself every Friday evening, opening wide the doors of the local galleries and art spaces to the public. It's a time for visitors and locals alike to enjoy artwork as well as a night out in a beautiful setting. Hard to beat that on a Friday night.

Waimea (population approx. 1800) shares the history & Aloha of the other 2 main towns, but has a flavor of its own. Today, that is the recent growth of high tech companies here. Waimea even has the West Kauai Technology & Visitor Center where you can learn about Kauai’s rich past and the future being formed there now. West Kauai does have its share of beautiful beaches and blue ocean, but what truly sets it apart are the more inland features (look at Waimea Homes for sale now).

Along with Waimea Canyon, you’ll also find the Kokee State Park. You’ll find rich forests, filled with native plants and flowers. There’s no shortage to the trails here, as you’ll find 45 miles of them in this Park alone.
