South Hilo NeighborhoodsLearn about Hilo, Wainaku, Pepeekeo & Other Towns
Hilo is the oldest city in Hawaii, built around the bay where fishing and farming industries quickly sprang up. In the 1800s it followed the path of much of the rest of the Islands, becoming part of the booming sugar business. Today tourism has taken over sugar’s dominance, but the legacy of that plantation era is strong. Locals and tourists alike love downtown Hilo’s wooden buildings, some of which are centuries old, and are on the Historic Registry. These structures that once held general stores and taverns are now home to art galleries, restaurants and shops.
With its larger population of over 43,000 and growing, your home buying choices are greater as development has added condo communities as well as houses to meet the needs of this expansion. Meet South Hilo's Communties of Pepeekeo, Wainaku & HakalauSmall town fans have much to attract them here as well, though. If you prefer more elbow room and the sound of nature surrounding you, there's definitely room in South Hilo for you, too. Check out Pepeekeo and Wainaku, both with populations under 1,800 people or even Honomu, where you’ll have less than 550 fellow residents. Hakalau is another smaller community that stands 15 miles north of Hilo. Created around the sugar plantations back in the 1800’s, modern farmers are growing a variety of crops including fruits, macadamia nuts, taro and coffee. Across this landscape some of the old sugar plantation houses and buildings are still standing today in Hakalau, making a picturesque backdrop in an already beautiful island setting. Finally, you have Waiakea, an area that was set down by the ancient Hawaiians under their ahupua’a, or subdivision, system. Those boundaries remain today. Waiakea is known for its many cattle farms and its upscale houses. Its large area gives residents room to stretch out on and they’ve done so in style. Waiakea provides schools for every grade, including Waiakawaena Elementary School, Waiakea Elementary School, Waiakea Intermediate School, and Waiakea High School.
