Neighborhoods Near Pohakuloa
Homes for Military Relocating to the Big Island of Hawaii
The Pohakuloa Training Area isn’t just a big U.S. military installation - it’s the biggest one in the Pacific, covering over 133,000 acres. This takes up a large part of the center of the Big Island, between the volcanic mountains of Muana Loa, Mauna Kea & Hualalai. That means you need a good strategy for finding homes near Pohakuloa Training Area. After all, there's no housing on the installation itself.
The main gates are off of the well-known and well-traveled Saddle Road that connects Hilo on the East with Kailua Kona on the West.
Despite the vast size of Pohakuloa, the main access off Saddle Road makes the districts of North Hilo, South Hilo & Hamakua your best choices for your home/work commute.
We’ll start with a look at South Hilo. The district of South Hilo contains the town of Hilo itself, which is the Big Island’s main city. It's not only the seat of the government for the Island but also the site of many large businesses as well.
The entire South Hilo district revolves around Hilo, if only by because it's the center for jobs on this side of the Island. That dominance means you’ll find more development here, including condo communities that are much less plentiful in other districts. Even the smaller South Hilo neighborhoods have townhouses and condos to serve the market, though there are still a few places, such as Pepeekeo & Kaumana, that don't. The greater number of housing choices alone might make this the place to begin your home search.
South Hilo Neighborhoods Include (Click on linked areas to see full properties for sale): Hakalau, Hilo, Lower Waiakea, Kaumana, Paukaa, Papaikou & Onomea, Pepeekeo & Honomu, Waiakea, Wainaku, Puueo & Kaiwiki
North Hilo Neighborhoods - Small Towns With City Access
North Hilo residents enjoy the access to Hilo shopping centers and resources, but without living in the developed area themselves. The easiest way to understand the difference between North and South Hilo is that there are no condos to be found up North. Home shopping means looking for the right house.
If you love lush greenery, greater spaces between you and the next door neighbor, and quiet evenings listening to the sounds of life around you, then this is where you should be. North Hilo is known for scenic areas that attract both locals and tourists, drawn by sights only Mother Nature herself could create.
Neighborhoods here, like Laupahoehoe, Ninole & Ookala each have populations of 200 people or less. This is small town life, Hawaii style.
Hamakua - Quiet Life in the Country
Hamakua’s towns are larger than North Hilo's, each community having their own flavor. They're all rooted, though, in the kind of places where everybody knows each other. This part of the Big Island is another that has only houses on the market. If you’re a lover of the rural or country life, you’ll find it in the Hamakua district.
The largest town is Honokaa, with 2,300 people living in its borders. The town’s sugar plantations are now gone, but the vintage architecture remains, making the main strip an eye-catcher that brings in visitors from all over. The Plantation Era businesses have been replaced by boutiques and art galleries that do very well.
Even more famous than the Honokaa strip is the Hamakua Heritage Corridor. Living here gives you easy access to this drive that includes ocean views, tumbling waterfalls and the kind of natural wonders that make being here a daily pleasure.
Like most other Big Island districts, driving will be necessary in Hamakua to get around. Places are spread out and the fact that you'll probably need a car to get to any job, military or otherwise, makes spending time in your auto just part of daily life. Still, if you have to do that, enjoying the sights of Hawaii during those trips beats most other places.
